Katy Perry video yanked from PBS's "Sesame Street"
[This post has been updated.]
Sesame Workshop, which produces the iconic public television kids show "Sesame Street," has issued a statement explaining why it pulled the video it shot of pop singer Katy Perry singing a duet of her tune "Hot 'N Cold" with show's puppet character Elmo. The decision to yank Perry's video performance, which was scheduled to air later in the year, came after the Decency Police saw the video online and got their cami-knickers in a bunch over Katy's outfit.
On the bright side, as one commenter on YouTube noted, "Wow, Sesame Street just got cool again."
Sesame Workshop, which has apparently found a direct descendant of Uriah Heep to hire as its crisis-control manager, issued the following long-ish statement which we bring to you in its entirety because it's a great read:
Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists. Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and the adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer's opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we've received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to viewer the video on You Tube.
It had, however, been expunged from the official YouTube "Sesame Street" page which had been washed down with lye. Okay, we made that last part up. The lye bit, that is, not the expunging. The video is, however, still available elsewhere on YouTube.
In case your mother has found a way to block video from your computer, we will now describe the one in question:
Katy Perry, who is perhaps still best know for her interpretation of the tune "I Kissed a Girl," is seen in front of a cute cartoon neighborhood, trying to get fuzzy orange puppet Elmo to play with her, while simultaneously singing a G-rated version of her tune "Hot 'N Cold"
Perry is wearing an acid-green party dress which - here's where you'll need to pay close attention - has a hem that is above her knee. However, the hem is not nearly as high as the red number that Teen Abstinence Advocate Bristol Palin wore this week when she was shaking her booty on the season debut of "Dancing with the Stars."
At the other end, while Bristol Palin's dress went all the way up to her neck -- Perry's dress does too. But the top bits of the dress are made of netting so as to show actual skin. The acid-green fabric is attached to the netting and fashioned into a bustier top which shows a bit of cleavage. Reporters who don't get out much have described it as low cut. To them we would like to say the following:
We know low-cut, low-cut is a favorite of ours. And, journalists who don't get out much, this is no-low cut dress. What "Dancing with the Stars" co-host Brooke Burke wore on the first night of that ABC dance competition series on Monday -- that was a low-cut dress. That Versace Jungle Dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammys -- that was a low-cut dress.
Another reporter noted outragedly - is that a word? - that Elmo, who in the video thinks Ms. Perry wants to play tag - is seen running at the hem of her dress.
While Elmo is making a mockery of decency, Perry is singing the lyrics:
How am I supposed to play with you?
You're up and you're down
You're running around
You're fast and you're slow
You're stop and you're go.
"With that dress it's a miracle this show is still rated G," wrote one outraged YouTube viewer.
And, since it was YouTube that seems to have been the catalyst for Sesame Workshop's ixnaying of Perry's "Sesame Street" appearance, The TV Column naturally wants to make sure you know more about the comments on the site in re this video.
"I wanna play dress up with Katy Perry," chimed in a more open-minded viewer, with the best of intentions, we're sure.
Another noted that Perry's dress is about as provocative as Miss Piggy's "Sesame Street" wardrobe - or that of Tinker Bell, another fave kids' character.
"Give me a break, what 2-4 year old is going to notice what she is wearing, it looks like a costume to me, she is cute and i think her and elmo are cute together, get over it.," wrote another, while the most observant of the pack noted, "Fact is ... what looks like Katy's bare chest is actually covered in flesh-colored mesh that goes all the way to her neck."
Another YouTube viewer -- a disciple of Aristophanese -- asserted, "I'm sure it is fat [heinie] jealous stay at home moms that are bitching. They got nothing better to do. I hope they don't take their kids to the beach or pool. Bunch of pansy [heinies]."
One YouTube patron could not let that go unchallenged.
"Im a stay at home mother and by no means am i fat. i look [darned] good thank you very much and i don't have any problems with this video or any others by Katy Perry she's hott! just thought I'd let you know that there are HOTT stay at home moms. :)"
Early Thursday afternoon, Perry tweeted: "Wow, looks like my play date with Elmo has been cut short! If you still wanna play see it at www.katyperry.com Tag you're it, Elmo!"
